The Freeman Nurse Scholars Program The Freeman Nurse Scholars Program is a scholarship program for outstanding undergraduate and graduate nursing students who wish to practice in Vermont. It is funded by a gift from the Stowe-based Freeman Foundation.
The goal of the program is to provide an incentive for excellent candidates to pursue a career in nursing and practice in Vermont.

What is the Award?

The award for undergraduate nursing students is $7500 per year to a maximum of $30,000 for BSN students and $15,000 for ADN students. The award for graduate nursing students is up to $17,000 per year to a maximum of $34,000.
Freeman Awards are made annually and will follow the scholar through successive years of education, assuming continued eligibility. Continued eligibility is based on:

  1. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 for undergraduate students or 3.5 for graduate students.
  2. Enrollment in an accredited nursing program as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credits) or graduate student with a minimum of six credits.
  3. Agreement to practice in Vermont for two years following graduation.

Who Should Apply?

Applicants should be highly motivated individuals seeking a nursing degree at one of Vermont’s five schools of nursing*. In select situations, support for graduate school enrollment at an out-of-state graduate program may be considered. Vermont residency is not required…. a commitment to practice in Vermont is.

What are the obligations of accepting this Award?

Upon accepting a Freeman Award, scholars must agree to practice in Vermont for a minimum of two years and provide up-to-date employment information and contact information during that period.
